DTVKit’s philosophy is to shape the future of the digital TV industry by enabling the joint development of a shared pool of software components. It operates a collaborative royalty free business model, and is supported by membership subscriptions.
Bringing together members that have a mutual interest in developing and maintaining the core building blocks of a broadcast DVB stack, the efforts of the DTVKit community further enhances the development of the four main software components; DVB Core, MHEG Engine, HbbTV Plug-in, CI+ Engine and Android TV.
As the number of members continues to increase, we look forward to a growing number of collaborative projects running at the same time. With less effort being spent on learning, porting, testing and redeveloping similar solutions, members will be able to free up valuable engineering resources to focus on what is most important – creating value add and differentiation for their customers.
The DTVKit Open Software Foundation Limited is a company ‘limited by guarantee’, which means it has no shareholders and is not legally permitted to make a profit. This construction ensures that DTVKit is run for the benefit of its members and cannot be acquired by another organisation. It is run by representatives of its member companies on the Governing Board and Technical Steering Committee.
The source code which formed the V1.0 release from DTVKit was supplied by Ocean Blue Software Ltd (OBS) by way of a perpetual, irrevocable royalty-free licence. Ocean Blue’s software has been developed over the past ten years and is present in approximately 15 million units globally.
