MHEG features and how DTVKit’s solution can benefit you

Last week the BBC decided to keep its Red Button text services. The original reasoning behind removing this service was due to mounting financial pressure. The decision to keep the Red Button text services was after a campaign on behalf of people with disabilities, the elderly and those without online access. The BBC intends to keep key news services through this platform, although the MHEG features will be reduced from next year.

MHEG (Multimedia Hypertext Expert Group) enables interactive services on digital TV devices for all transmission networks (DVB-T/S/C). The current standard is ETSI MHEG, which all the country profiles are generated. Furthermore, each country/operator defines their own profile to ensure that the devices are deployed into their market can support the features used by their MHEG applications.

MHEG Features

At DTVKit, MHEG has always been a part of our core software components from the beginning. MHEG allows a wide range of TV-centric interactive services to be deployed. Features of MHEG include news, weather services, home shopping, electronic programming guides (EPG), interactive advertising and games. To get the best viewing experience possible HD is available.

MHEG Benefits

DTVKit is still committed to ensuring that our MHEG solution is current, so our members have access to the latest versions of the software. MHEG is used globally still to this day by a number of countries which have defined their country profile. The MHEG interactive TV middleware has been implemented in Freeview and Freesat in the UK, Freeview in New Zealand, TVB in Hong Kong, Freeview in Australia, Saorview in Ireland, and South Africa.

MHEG allows the broadcaster to allocate the channel settings on the receiver. This automatic update ensures that channels are always up to date with your favourite shows and channels. The wide range of interactive features provides the consumer with positive user experience.
